Overwhelmed with emotions and with our hearts full we would like to write you a word or two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please do not hold it against us if we make it a bit longer, because \u2013 during just 3 days in Rijeka, we have experienced so much! \ud83d\ude00<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container\" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe title=\"Smoqua 2 - Festival of Queer and Feminist Culture\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aSFjGo2qKYc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Firstly, we&nbsp;<strong>want to thank the truly amazing team<\/strong>&nbsp;of people that worked hard and managed to make the second edition of Smoqua even better than the first one \u2013&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ffri.uniri.hr\/hr\/centri-i-skole\/centar-za-zenske-studije.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Centre for Women\u2019s Studies (University of Rijeka)<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pariter.hr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PaRiter<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Gra%C4%91ani-svom-gradu-1191256687577269\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">platform From the Citizens to their City<\/a><\/strong>, as well as to other associates:&nbsp;<strong>Art-Kino, Cafe Bar Striga, Crkva Club, Damir Urban and LET 3<\/strong>&nbsp;(shooting of the promotion video was great!),&nbsp;<strong>Queer Zagreb, Filodrammatica, Palach, RI-INFO, Youth Club Rijeka<\/strong>&nbsp;and many others. Smoqua would not exist without the financial support of&nbsp;<strong>Rijeka 2020 \u2013 European Capital of Culture<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>City of Rijeka<\/strong>, plus one big thanks to our sponsors&nbsp;<strong>Adria print<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Bordel La Grotta<\/strong>. We want to specially thank our participants who had actively engaged in deconstruction of prejudice, promotion of human rights and queer and feminist culture, as well as in dialogue with the audience. Finally, we are happy and grateful to Smoqua's audience (from Rijeka as well as the crew coming from other cities just for the festival) that was dedicated, interested, and willing to actively participate in the programme. We are proud to say that visitors from other cities and countries were amazed by our, as they said, wonderful city! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">However, all of this would not be possible nor equally successful without the time, will, patience and love for Smoqua of our <strong>hardworking volunteers!<\/strong> From the bottom of our hearts, thank you Alex, Vedran, Romana, Barbara, Lea, Tena, Tea, Nora... In fairness, you are amazing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>So, how did we queer-up Rijeka for couple of days?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">A big success of the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/lorihr.lin45.host25.com\/hr\/zabava\/smoqua-festival\/826-prva-smoqua-kako-nam-je-bilo-sto-se-zbivalo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first edition of Smoqua<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0was a certain \u2018refreshment\u2019 of queer scene in Rijeka and the broader region which motivated us and gave us strength to take a step further with Smoqua 2. This is how it became an international festival, with participants from 3 continents, happening precisely on the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT), 17th of May. This has been the 6th year in a row that LORI marks the IDAHOT and Rijeka is still the only Croatian city that shows its support by raising the rainbow flag above the City Hall\u2019s entrance. Naturally, this act has been chosen for the opening of the festival on Thursday, 17th of May at 8 o\u2019clock, alongside the <strong>4 other rainbow flags \u2018looking over\u2019 Korzo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"218\" src=\"https:\/\/lori.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Smoqua-2-1-min.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lori.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Smoqua-2-1-min.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/lori.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Smoqua-2-1-min-300x65.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lori.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Smoqua-2-1-min-768x167.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Smoqua has gathered artists and activists with whom we have thought and discussed about Pride and prejudice \u2013 the topic of this year\u2019s festival, and about currently relevant questions related to queer and feminism in our communities, as well as outside of Croatia. Through the programme we hoped to provide our audience with new knowledge, sensitize them, move the limits of our usual rationale and encourage development of the new ideas and emotions \u2013 with an aim of creating better society that nurtures acceptance and inclusion, community that is constantly moving forward and within which individuals develop, progress and grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"237\" src=\"https:\/\/lori.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Smoqua-2-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7211\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lori.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Smoqua-2-2.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/lori.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Smoqua-2-2-300x71.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lori.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Smoqua-2-2-768x182.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Smoqua\u2019s main focus from the very beginning has been openness - it is a space opened for anyone interested, with a majority of the events and activities carried out in public areas: Korzo, the City Hall, cinema, cafes, clubs etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container\" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe title=\"MojaRijeka.hr - Tribina - \u201ePresjek stanja prava LGBT osoba i \u017eena u Europi\u201c\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-DdHrMiqJ0k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During the first day, visitors had the opportunity to inform themselves about the work of CSOs in the field of women\u2019s rights and\/or LGBTIQ topics Rijeka and its surroundings at our info booths on Korzo, to learn about the \"different\" history of Rijeka during the Queer walk and to learn more about the program from the organizers at the opening session. Further on, there was a panel where we discussed&nbsp;<strong>the state of rights of LGBT persons and women in Europe<\/strong>&nbsp;, where besides the brilliant moderator&nbsp;<strong>Marina \u0160krabalo<\/strong>&nbsp;spoke the UN representative&nbsp;<strong>Cianan Russell&nbsp;<\/strong>from Transgender Europe,&nbsp;<strong>Florin Buhuceanu<\/strong>- Romanian LGBT activist, and&nbsp;<strong>Karolina Wieckiewicz<\/strong>, a Polish activist for women's reproductive rights. Afterwards, in the fully-packed Fillodrammatica, <strong>Kris Grey<\/strong>, transgender artist from the USA, has amazed with his multimedial performance&nbsp;<strong>Body Dialectics<\/strong>&nbsp;. It was a real&nbsp;<strong>spectacle for the senses<\/strong>, as Kris introduced us to the transgender topics, exploring identity and evoking a storm of emotions. In the evening we celebrated IDAHOT at&nbsp;<strong>Caffe bar Striga<\/strong>, downing shooters in the colours of the rainbow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container\" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe title=\"MojaRijeka.hr - Body Dialectics \u2013 Kris Grey\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7NyPgB9rUVA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">The second day (Friday) has started with a workshop led by M\u00f3nica Cano Abad\u00eda (from Spain) which gave us a chance to learn about feminist self-defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"504\" src=\"https:\/\/lori.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Smoqua-2-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lori.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Smoqua-2-3.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/lori.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Smoqua-2-3-300x151.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lori.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Smoqua-2-3-768x387.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This was followed by the opening of&nbsp;<strong>Marina \u0160alov\u2019s photo exhibition (In)visible Love Stories<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 the number of people trying to \u2018squeeze\u2019 into the exhibition space is an evidence of a exteremely high interest for her art. The brilliant&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MarkoRogicWoW\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">White on White<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;have contributed to the touching atmosphere of modesty and pride by opening the exhibition with their music performance. Further on, there was a programme in Kri\u017eani\u0107 street, in the venue Citizens to their City. There we first had an opportunity to listen to&nbsp;<strong>Mavi Veloso<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Kris Grey<\/strong>&nbsp;talk about their work and the position of trans artists, moderated by&nbsp;<strong>Zvonimir Dobrovi\u0107<\/strong>&nbsp;from Queer Zagreb. After the discussion, the audience enjoyed the impressive performance&nbsp;<strong>Project TRANS<\/strong>&nbsp;by the Brazilian artist Veloso which fused video, performance, photography and drag queen culture. Afterwards, the first&nbsp;<strong>GSG magazine for society and art was presented<\/strong>&nbsp;, which was developed as a document of the Smoqua 1. Final event was&nbsp;<strong>a card tournament<\/strong>&nbsp;\ud83d\ude42 \u2013 we got introduced to the interesting and educative card game&nbsp;<strong>\u201eFierce Women\u201c, created by the team of VoxFeminae.<\/strong>&nbsp;The tournament was opened by game\u2019s ambassadors from Rijeka,<strong>&nbsp;and fierce women themselves - Brigita Milo\u0161, Nikolina Deranja and Danijela Almesberger<\/strong>. Night hours of the second day we spent in&nbsp;<strong>Bordel La Grotta<\/strong>, drinking wine and chatting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container\" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe title=\"MojaRijeka.hr - Radionica feministi\u010dke samoobrane\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aYa3_-atehE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The morning of the third day (although it was not included in the programme) we of course spent on Korzo in the protest called&nbsp;<strong>\u201cMarch for Freedom\u201d<\/strong>, which was organised by&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/GGRijeka\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the citizens of Rijeka<\/a><\/strong>, as a reaction to the so-called March for \u2018Life\u2019. The support to resilience against the efforts to threaten the rights of women, LGBTI persons, members of national minorities - in one word \u2013 all the \u2018others\u2019 in our homeland, was showed also by the participant of Smoqua coming from other countries. Therefore, with this strong feeling of contributing to freedom, love, dignity and togetherness we have started the last day of the festival. It was hard to believe that this protest is not part of the programme. \ud83d\ude42 It was amazing how many citizens of Rijeka attended! As well, there was the&nbsp;<strong>Wall art<\/strong>&nbsp;on St. Barbara\u2019s square where we have also created a mural of queer and feminist ideas. Afterwards, participants were offered the opportunity to \u2018queer-up\u2019 a mainstream movie within the&nbsp;<strong>Queering-up workshop<\/strong>&nbsp;in Youth club Rijeka (as it turned out, the lesbians have saved the Titanic :)) and they did their \u2018job\u2019 brilliantly! We have enjoyed the powerful performance&nbsp;<strong>Ctitoria Clitoria<\/strong>&nbsp;by Romanian artist&nbsp;<strong>Ruth Borgfjord<\/strong>, that raised topics of her personal artistic path as a queer creator, lesbian, and as a person to whom spirituality is very important. This was at the same time a perfect introduction to the panel discussion&nbsp;<strong>Who Is Allowed to Believe in God?<\/strong>, on&nbsp;<strong>the attitude of the Church towards women and LGBT persons<\/strong>, where&nbsp;<strong>Marjana Harcet<\/strong>, theologist from Slovenia, moderated discussion between Ruth and&nbsp;<strong>Mihael Se\u010den<\/strong>&nbsp;from Rijeka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container\" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe title=\"MojaRijeka.hr - Ctitoria Clitoria i Tko smije vjerovati u Boga?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zabg5qbD7PE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">In the evening we watched the touching documentary When I was a boy, I was a girl in Art-kino.
